Renovating Your Bathroom? Don’t Do What They Did

“I didn’t hire a reputable contractor”

This is a huge error affecting many homeowners every year. Why? It comes down to the fact that not all contractors who advertise online, or even in directories and newspapers, are reputable or trustworthy. There may even be companies in your area who aren’t licensed or property trained to do remodeling work. Are these the kind of folks you want tackling your bathroom renovation project?

Customer feedback is an important thing to look for. Collect as many opinions about the company as you can, either online or from people you know who have dealt with the company before. Is it suspiciously difficult to find feedback on the company, or do you see negative feedback? If so, it might be time to reconsider.

Also look for certifications, licensing, insurance, company-branded vehicles, a brick-and-mortar business location, administrative help, and honest contracts. When you hire professionals, make sure you get professionals and not moonlighters.

“I went to far with the sledgehammer.”

Have you planned out your bathroom renovation completely, from the layout to the fixtures and their exact dimensions? If not, hold off on that demolition work. You might be so eager to start on your project and get rid of the old stuff that you start tearing things apart without a clear plan in place. This would be a mistake, adding costs to the project budget as you adapt to erroneous demolition work. Professionals will always make sure things are well planned and understood before demolishing anything.

“I tried to save a buck on materials.”

There are many different types and grades of building materials out there—and you will need many different types of building materials to carry out a detailed bathroom renovation. Make sure you buy quality components and products at every turn, because the integrity and finish of your new bathroom will be a direct reflection of the quality of the materials you purchased. Buying the cheapest of everything is a recipe for problems a year, two years, or five years from now. Go for quality and longevity over temporary savings. If contracting a professional renovator, make sure you agree on using the best quality materials.

Don’t make the same mistakes!

There are many things that can go wrong in bathroom renovation projects if you aren’t aware of the mistakes people commonly make. The most important things are 1) only work with establish, reputable contractors (even if their estimates aren’t the absolute rock bottom available), and 2) research carefully and plan meticulously if doing the project yourself. Then you’ll be on your way to a renovated bathroom.

Good luck with your renovations! Please comment below.
