5 Roof Installation Mistakes Contractors Make

1. Wrong Installation of Shingles

One of the biggest mistakes contractors make is installing shingles in the wrong order. Shingles are the first layer when putting up a roof. They are mainly waterproof. Shingles are arranged in a specific method and if not done correctly, there would be a lack of proper adhesion with the next layer of shingles. Some contractors source different types of shingles from other manufacturers reason being they are cheap. Generally, those that are cheap are of low quality. It is important to note that manufacturers create shingles in batches, and each of them has a definite color shade. All this will affect the aesthetic view of the roof.

Another mistake when it comes to the installation of shingles is when nailing them. There is a specific angle at which nails ought to be inserted. If pushed too deep, they will cause damage and make it easy during heavy downfall or storm to be carried away. Shingles need four to six nails to hold them down. The use of fewer nails can make the shingles lose. This will increase the risk of cracks, which makes the roof exposed to outside elements. Besides, if nails get exposed, they will eventually rust and result in leaks.

2. Lack of a Leak Barrier and Drip Edge
The purpose of a leak or an edge barrier is to protect the structure from water vandalism. Most contractors avoid these to keep the money intended for it. The drip edge covers any gaps that are between the roof deck and the gutter board. It prevents rainwater from entering under the areas of the roof edge. These vital roofing parts should be incorporated when constructing.

3. Poor Installation of Drainage
Unlike any other parts of a building structure, roofs are the ones that experience a lot of rainfall. Because of this, roofs do need a place where they can drain the water. If there is no drainage, the water will sit on the roof causing damage. It will lead to leakage of that water into the building. An example of drainage is gutters. They help drain the water to the outer part of the building and prevent further damage to the roof.

4. Lack of a Chimney Cricket
A cricket in roofing is a piece of metal put behind the chimney to form a hump. Its purpose is to prevent water from stagnating around the chimney as it flows down to the roof. The cricket with the hump-like shape helps break the water. Once broken, the water goes around the chimney and prevents any leaks. Some contractors might not install this as they think it is not necessary. It is also imperative to note poor installation can destroy the whole building. Installation should be done in the right way.

5. Lack of Ventilation
Any building or structure should not lack ventilation. It plays a vital role in the drop of humidity and condensation that has accumulated in the building or the attic part of the building. Many contractors tend to ignore it. It can cause decay, fungus, and mold. The ventilation helps to put a stop to the buildup of excess moisture hence why it is necessary to include it.

If you are planning to roof your structure, above are some of the mistakes contractors make. If these mistakes are not averted, it will lead to a bigger problem, which will be expensive to set right. Roofing is an investment that one needs to watch out for keenly. If not done well, the project will be very expensive for you. Contractors are known to do a shoddy job. It is best to hire a trained supervisor at the construction site to ensure everything is in order. Moreover, use trained contractors from a well-known company. You should also consider checking their reviews to ensure they will do a good job for you.
