3 Great Ideas for Home Additions

1. Garage Conversion

One of the most common ways to add square footage to your living space is to convert your garage. This is a tempting addition because the foundation and space already exists — it’s just a matter of re-envisioning and remodeling for your specific purpose.

Best of all, a garage can become virtually whatever you want it to be. From an additional bedroom to a playroom or home gym, the possibilities are endless. It’s worth noting that in some parts of the country it’s more difficult to sell a home that has no garage. For this reason, it’s definitely worth doing your research before committing to this partition add-on.

2. Adding a Bathroom

Increasing the number of bathrooms in your home will often increase its value — not to mention make life more comfortable for you and your family. While this isn’t an easy job to undertake, it is a fairly popular one. Consult with a contractor to find out where it makes the most sense to add in a bathroom, given the current plumbing in your home. Don’t have space (or budget) for a whole new bathroom? Consider bumping out your current half bath and making it a full. This is an effective way to achieve a similar result at a fraction of the cost.

3. Bring the Outdoors In

While it might not make sense in every region, a sunroom or “California room” is a relatively easy add-on for people who love to spend time outdoors and would like to open their home to fresh air and light. These rooms include a ceiling, and usually have two parallel walls with the third composed of sliding or folding glass doors that can be left open. Sunrooms can be built adjacent to a living room, kitchen, or even bedroom — and they’re simply a great way to add unique living space to your home.

Finding a Reliable Home Remodeling Contractor

If you’ve been thinking about adding an addition to your home, you’re obviously going to want to be careful about how you work with. There are any number of contractors in your area — but not all of them have the highest levels of experience, training and customer service.

As you begin your search, form a clear idea of the project you want to take on. This will allow you to collect accurate estimates and timelines from a variety of candidates. Once you settle on a contractor, make sure they understand where you’re coming from. A skilled renovator will make sure you’re on the exact same page before taking the first step toward your home addition.
